Prophet Walter Magaya Arrested: Confronts 78 Counts of Fraud and Multiple Rape Allegations
HARARE – In a dramatic escalation of legal woes for one of Zimbabwe’s most prominent religious figures, Prophet Walter Magaya was arrested by a specialized police unit on November 1, 2025. The founder of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries was taken into custody at his church offices, facing a staggering 78 counts of fraud and five counts of rape. The arrest has sent shockwaves throughout the nation, as thousands of his followers react to the news of their leader’s detention.
The fraud charges are primarily centered around a massive housing scheme that has left hundreds of congregants in financial ruin. Prosecutors allege that Magaya, through his companies Planet Africa and Yadah Connect, promised residential stands in prestigious areas such as Chishawasha and Norton. However, investigations revealed that the land in question was either not owned by his companies or was embroiled in complex ownership disputes with third parties, including former high-ranking government officials.
Parallel to the financial allegations are serious charges of sexual misconduct. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has detailed five counts of rape involving adult members of the church. One particularly harrowing case alleges that a victim conceived a child as a result of the abuse. Magaya has consistently denied these allegations, with his legal team characterizing the charges as a coordinated attempt to dismantle his ministry and reputation.
The arrest was not without incident, as reports surfaced of a syndicate attempting to raise US$200,000 to bribe investigators and judicial officers. This further complication has led to increased security around the proceedings. The state has indicated that it possesses overwhelming evidence, including victim testimonies and financial trails that link the Prophet directly to the alleged fraudulent activities.
As the legal process begins, the High Court has granted Magaya US$3,000 bail under strict conditions, including the surrender of his passport and the title deeds to his Mt. Pleasant residence. The eyes of Zimbabwe and the international community remain fixed on the Harare Magistrates’ Court, where the trials are expected to be among the most followed in the country’s history. The outcome will undoubtedly reshape the landscape of Pentecostal Christianity in the region.
